Beet Juice Boosts Endurance

Attention all athletes: A new study has found that drinking beet juice regularly can improve stamina in exercise. The study, published by the U.K. University of Exeter’s School of Sport and Health Sciences found organic beetroot juice allowed participants to exercise for 15 percent longer than usual.

The study participants drank 500mL of beet juice six days in a row before completing exercise tests including cycling and exercise bike. There was also a placebo phase, where the participants were given blackcurrant cordial to drink daily instead of the beetroot juice before completing the fitness tests. The study found that the participants were able to cycle an average of 92 second longer after drinking the beet juice for six days than after drinking the placebo.

The researchers also found the beet juice “doubled the amount of nitrate in volunteers’ blood and reduced the rate at which muscles used their main source of energy.” It also increased muscle efficiency and decreased the uptake of oxygen during high and low-intensity exercise. They’re unsure why this increased nitrate had an effect on endurance, but believe it could result from the nitrate converting to nitric oxide, thereby reducing the oxygen cost of exercise.

“Our study is the first to show that nitrate-rich food can increase exercise endurance,” said Professor Andy Jones, the study’s lead researcher. “We were amazed by the effects of beetroot juice on oxygen uptake because these effects cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training.”

Jones said he is excited about the implications of this study for those who are not physically fit, such as the elderly. “I am also keen to explore the relevance of the findings to those people who suffer from poor fitness and may be able to use dietary supplements to help them go about their daily lives.”

Beets are nutrient dense powerhouses and can be a healthy addition to any persons diet; athlete or couch potato. Rich in calcium, iron, copper, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous and the always important zinc as well as beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A, vitamin B complex and vitamin C. Beets also contain a number of phytochemicals including lutein and zeaxanthin, the cartenoid nutrients important for eye health.

Black Poo

Is Indigestion Causing Your Black Poo?

Although there are many causes of black poop, indigestion is often to blame in many people. If you are like most others, you don’t realize what a huge role digestion plays on your overall health or how many different elements actually affect your digestive system. If you have black poo and indigestion, it is helpful to understand exactly what is causing it and why your body is so affected by it.

What is Indigestion?

You may be wondering how black poop has anything to do with indigestion. Well, it all has to do with your digestive tract which starts working when you consume something and it continues to work on those precise contents until you have a bowel movement. Digestion is a very slow and complex process and anything that happens along the way to either speed it up or slow it down disrupts the way contents are meant to break down while they are traveling through the esophagus, stomach and intestines. Typically you are lacking good bacteria that aids in digestion or your system is off-balance, here is an article that can help you to learn getting rid of indigestion fast.

Understand that while indigestion can cause black poop, your dark stool color can also be a symptom of an underlying medical problem. Most people only experience indigestion for a short time until their body is balanced again while others deal with it sporadically. If yours does progress for an extended period of time, you should speak to a medical care provider because it could be a result of ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease or gallbladder disease.

Symptoms of Indigestion

If you have black poo but you are not sure if you have indigestion or not, some of the other symptoms include:

• Feeling full or bloated
• Nausea and/or vomiting
• Acidic or sour taste in the mouth
• Burning in the upper abdomen or stomach which can be severe
• Abdominal pain that can be mild to severe
• Belching and/or gas

It is important to note that if you have a burning sensation in your chest, this is a sign of heartburn, not indigestion. Heartburn occurs when the esophagus is burned by stomach acids that rise up. Most people confuse the two and although they can be related, they are still different medical concerns.

Causes of Indigestion

Although you may be blaming indigestion for your black poo, you should know that indigestion does not just happen all on its own. Common causes of indigestion include anxiety, depression, excessive alcohol consumption, ulcer, GERD, gastroparesis, stomach infections, thyroid disease, aspirin and other painkiller (prescription and over-the-counter), estrogen and birth control, steroid medication, antibiotics, thyroid medication, eating too much or too fast, eating when stressed, poor diet choices, smoking cigarettes, fatigue and pregnancy.

Although sometimes a doctor visit is warranted, for the most part, black poo that is caused by indigestion is something that can be addressed by making healthier lifestyle choices and restoring the balance in your system.

Handling Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection Properly

A lot of ladies fear the term Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection for a number of reasons. One of the main reasons is that the word Chronic is in it. They think that this term refers to an irreversible condition that can lead to death. This is why they often deny that they have the condition to others and to themselves. However, can this help lessen the extent of the condition or can it make the condition worse?

The answer: Definitely, worse

By ignoring the presence of Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection, you are only making things worse. This is because you will end up refusing medical treatments since you do not recognize its presence. You will think that you don’t need any type of treatment may it be a home or hospital remedy. This can make the situation worse for you.

What Can Further Aggravate the Situation?

Aside from completely ignoring the fact that you are suffering from the condition, the other thing that won’t be able to help you out is panic. You should keep your cool and start focusing on the things that you can do. This will help you get rid of the problem at a much quicker pace. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you have to live with this condition for the rest of your life just because it is labeled as “chronic”.

The First Step towards Recovery – Healthier Hygienic Routines

Start developing more hygienic routines. Assess yourself if you are brushing your teeth adequately or if your genital hygiene is up to par with the standards. If you have poor hygiene, then the medications and the treatments that you need to undergo will become futile. The amount of antifungal creams that you are going to apply on your lesions would not matter one bit. In order to become aware of the right hygienic regimens, you can talk to your doctor or your health care provider.

The Second Step: Knowing the Cause

Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection can be caused by a lot of factors. By eliminating the cause, you are already eliminating the chances of recurrence and the further progression of the disease. The condition can be caused by stress, low immune system or even pregnancy. If the root cause is pregnancy, then the only thing that you can do is to amp up your hygienic practices.

If it is caused by stress or depressed immune system on the other hand, you can start working on relaxation techniques and other regimens that can boost your immune system. As you can see, the point of your treatment depends on the cause. This is why it is very important to identify the main cause of your problem.

The Third Step: Learn to Use the Right Types of Medications

Some people think that Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection is caused by a bacterial infection. This is why they take antibiotics in the hopes of nipping the problem right at the butt. What they don’t realize is that this condition is caused by a FUNGAL infection. This means that in order to get rid of it, you need to use antifungal medications. Antibiotics or antiviral medications won’t really do much to help with your condition. You will just waste your money and your time since you need to wait for the results before you can move on to other forms of treatment.

The Fourth Step: Recognize Your Options

When it comes to the treatment for Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection, you can either choose a home treatment or a hospital-based treatment. Hospital-based treatment means following the orders of your doctor religiously. This can be more expensive since you will need to go to your doctor’s clinic multiple times.

Home treatments are for those who want to save a lot of money and get rid of the disease quickly.

The Best Home Treatment: Step by Step Cure for Yeast Infections

A Step by Step Cure for Yeast Infections is a sure fire regimen that can help cure your condition quickly and efficiently. The best part about this program is that it can assure you that your condition won’t come back anytime soon. It can also guarantee that you won’t suffer from any harmful side effects which happen to be the main problem when it comes to a hospital-based treatment. Another thing is that you won’t have to spend tens and thousands of dollars on expensive medications.

Be wise when it comes to treating Chronic Vaginal Yeast Infection. Recognize the fact that you have an easier and cheaper option when it comes to the treatment modalities. Open yourself to new and better cures.

Sinusitis: When to Call the Doctor

Many people have learned to recognize the onset of sinusitis. At first, the coughing and sneezing make you think you might be getting a cold. Then your face starts hurting. Could it be a bad tooth? The headache and fatigue might point to the flu. The pain starts to combine with a dizzy, off-center feeling. Then comes the “balloon head,” and you know – that combination of intense pain, floating, and throbbing pressure tell you it’s probably your sinuses.

There are four pairs of facial sinuses, which are basically just hollow spaces that drain mucus into the nose. The frontal sinuses are over the eyes, the maxillary sinuses are inside the cheekbones, the ethmoid sinuses are behind the bridge of the nose between the eyes, and the sphenoid sinuses are behind the nose and eyes, a bit higher than the ethmoids. If all the sinuses are infected that’s called Pansinusitis that you can find more on the symptoms and treatments.

Sinuses are normally sterile and self-cleaning. But a common cold, allergies, or anything else that causes swelling in the nose can also affect the sinuses. Air, mucus, or pus trapped in a blocked sinus causes pain and pressure through all the sinuses, since they are connected. Similarly, when air is blocked from getting in to a sinus by swelling, a vacuum can be created that also causes pain.

Symptoms
Symptoms of sinusitis can include fever, weakness, fatigue, cough, and congestion. People with sinusitis often have a headache as soon as they wake up in the morning. Parts of the face might feel tender to the touch or look swollen. Nasal congestion and discharge might be green, yellow, or blood-tinged. The mucus can drain down the back of the throat, an annoying symptom called postnasal drip.

Although you can’t cure a sinus infection with home remedies, you can use them to lessen your discomfort. Inhaling steam from a vaporizer or a hot cup of water might soothe inflamed sinus cavities. A hot water bottle or wet compresses applied over the inflamed area also can be comforting.

Drink plenty of liquids, and use over-the-counter medications to reduce pain. Avoid non-prescription nose drops or sprays-they can interfere with normal nasal and sinus function and can be addictive, triggering more symptoms when you stop using them.

Acute or Chronic?
Acute sinusitis usually lasts about 3 weeks and is associated with colds or sore throats which turn into bacterial infections. It’s easy to confuse simple nasal congestion with sinusitis, but infections like the common cold usually last about a week and go away without treatment. Acute sinusitis lasts longer than a week and usually does not go away on its own.

Chronic sinusitis lasts longer, often 3 months or more, and is associated with allergies, anatomical abnormalities and repeated or untreated acute infections.

Health experts estimate 37 million Americans are affected by sinusitis every year, and spend $5.8 billion on healthcare costs related to sinusitis.

Some infections will eventually go away, but others need treatment from your health care provider. Call your doctor or health care provider if:

  • You have a temperature higher than 102 degrees
  • Your symptoms continue for 2 weeks or longer
  • Your condition keeps getting worse instead of better
  • You develop blurred vision.

Your health care provider can prescribe a course of treatment that will clear up the source of the inflammation and relieve the symptoms.

Doctors generally recommend decongestants to reduce the congestion, antibiotics to control a bacterial infection, if present, and pain relievers to reduce the pain.

If you are given a prescription, take the medication as directed and finish the entire prescription, even if you start to feel better.

Over-the-counter and prescription decongestant nose drops and sprays, however, should not be used for more than a few days. When used for longer periods, these drugs can lead to even more congestion and swelling of the nasal passages. To avoid complications, use them only for the amount of time recommended. Discard them after treatment, and don’t share the drops with others.

For patients with severe chronic sinusitis, a doctor may prescribe oral steroids, such as prednisone. Because oral steroids can have significant side effects, they are prescribed only when other medications have not been effective.

If you have an allergic disease along with sinusitis, you may also need medicine to control allergies. This may include a nasal steroid spray that reduces the swelling around the sinus passages and allows the sinuses to drain. If you already have asthma and then get sinusitis, your asthma may worsen. You should stay in close touch with your healthcare provider to modify your asthma treatment if needed.

Surgical Options
For some people with chronic sinusitis, health care providers might decide that surgery is the only way to prevent ongoing episodes. The goal of surgery, which is done through the nose, is to improve sinus drainage and reduce blockage of the nasal passages.

In children, problems often are eliminated by removing the adenoids, pieces of tissue at the back of the throat that can obstruct the nasal sinus passages.

Adults who have had allergic and infectious conditions over the years sometimes develop polyps that interfere with drainage. Removing these polyps or repairing a deviated septum to ensure an open airway often provides noticeable relief from sinus symptoms. The most common surgery done today is called “functional endoscopic sinus surgery,” in which the natural openings from the sinuses are enlarged to allow drainage.

Although a substantial number of patients will still have some problems after surgery, most people have fewer symptoms and better quality of life.

How to Treat Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stone is a disease caused when there is a formation of calcium in our soft tissues present at the back of our throat. Mainly the stones are composed of calcium and other components like magnesium, carbonate, ammonia and phosphorus. These tissues most commonly form in lingual and palatine tonsils. Most important duty of tonsils is to protect the flow of germs and bacteria, but sometimes it may lead to a serious syndrome due to the constant presence of these bacteria. Weight of the tonsils is between 300ms to maximum 42gms. Larger a tonsil is, more difficult it would be to treat it. Many factors can cause tonsils, like having caffeine and sugar, smoking without a filter, allergy caused due to dairy products, dead white blood cells and presence of oral bacteria in our throat. Symptoms are difficulty in swallowing food, sore throat, bad breath and ear ache etc. If you feel any of the above symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

In case of tonsils, whether to see a doctor or not depends on the size of the tonsil. But it is always suggested to a patient to keep seeking advice from doctor. Normally, a doctor will suggest you a prescription of antibiotics. Antibiotics are not that beneficial but reduce the aching temptation far quickly then natural remedies. Use of antibiotic medicines is not preferred as they leave a negative impact on patient’s health and does not sort out the root of disease. Sometimes, doctors also advice you to make minor changes in your meals. Use of caffeine, tea and sugar filled food items is restricted. Moreover, you are asked to avoid taking dairy products on regular basis as they can cause infection. A patient should drink as much water as he can.

Another uncomplicated but effective method is to remove them through oral irrigator. Use of electric oral irrigator is not suitable for tonsil stones as they are too powerful because of the electric connection. It can cause infection and high pain to the patient. Therefore, it is more preferable to use those irrigators which are directly linked with the sink tape through a threaded connection. You can increase or decrease the pressure of water by controlling the tap and thus clean your tonsils easily. Moreover, you don’t have to worry about the charging of battery as they don’t work with electricity. So after cleaning you should use a mouthwash to wipe away all the remaining pieces and give you a refreshing feeling. The treatment of tonsil stones that are larger in size can be done through Curettage. It is a process in which you remove tissue by shoveling or scrapping.

Laser is another option for the treatment of tonsil stones in a much quicker and simple way. This process is termed as cryptolysis, in which tonsils are removed through laser resurfacing. Laser treatment is done using a local anesthetic; a way in which all the treatment is done after getting patient unconscious. In order to smooth the surface of tonsils Carbon dioxide laser is effectively used. One last option is to treat tonsilloliths via surgery. After consulting doctor you can get rid of it through operation.

What Causes Infantigo

Impetigo(infantigo) – pustular skin disease caused by streptococci and staphylococci. Pathogen penetrates through the cracks and scratches the skin, the mouth of the hair follicles.

What causes impetigo? Development of the disease contribute to the micro, maceration, skin contamination, enhanced sweating, metabolic disorders (diabetes), vitamin deficiencies, immune suppression (after previous serious illness, etc.).

Impetigo – an infectious disease transmitted mainly by direct contact with patients, sometimes through the towels, toys, clothing or household items.

Read this article for more about Infantigo including causes, symptoms and treatment options.

Symptoms and types of Infantigo

The main symptoms: Small bubbles or rough with a crust of yellow or honey-colored skin. Often, they first appear on the face, around the nose, but then may spread to the arms and legs. At times can be observed an increase in the nearest lymph nodes.

Impetigo may be accompanied by the formation of blisters: this form is caused by staph bacteria that produce toxins, it becomes a cause of the gap in communications between the epidermis and deeper layers of skin. Blisters may appear in different areas of the skin, especially on the buttocks, the bubbles are fragile, often broken, leaving a red, moist area of skin with ragged edges.

Distinguish staphylococcal impetigo, strep and strep-staphylococci.

Strep impetigo starts as a few towering, inclined to the peripheral growth of conflicts – cavity elements such as bubbles ranging in size from 2 to 10 mm or more in diameter. Eruptions are scattered or crowded groups, surrounded by a narrow rim of hyperemia. The contents of conflicts initially clear, then cloudy and rapidly shrinking into a light-yellow crusts fall off after 5-7 days, after which it remains to depigmentation.

The varieties of strep impetigo are a simple person lichen or dry pyoderma – centers thin plastic flaky with a slight reddening of the skin.

Another type of strep impetigo – streptococcal will pick that are more common in children. They begin with the appearance in the corner of his mouth bladder flaccid thin cap, in his place quickly formed slit-like erosion, after the removal of which revealed a red wet easily bleeding surface with a crack in the center. After 1-2 hours bridou again crusty. The process may be accompanied by a small sore on opening the mouth. The process often extends to the oral mucosa. Sometimes impetigo occurs in isolation in the mouth, where on the site to quickly revealing conflicts generated painful erosion, covering a purulent coating.

Variant of cystic impetigo is superficial, and felon in which conflicts arise in the nail rollers accurately around the nail in place burr trauma (for example, during a manicure), needle-stick injuries, etc. With injuries such conflicts is exposed and formed weeping erosion in a large number of streptococci in the discharge.

Cloudy Urine and Diabetes

Diabetic urine is cloudy

Diabetes not only can cause glucose in urine, but may also lead to cloudy urine according to Actforlibraries, that may be present with either red or white cloudy appearance, respectively, representing blood in urine and bacteriuria (pyuria).

Diabetes and urinary tract infections

Infections are the common complications in diabetes, such as purulent skin infections, fungal skin infections, Candida albicans vaginitis, pulmonary tuberculosis.

Diabetes also often lead to urinary tract infection, mostly being pyelonephritis and cystitis, which recurrently attack and thus turn to chronic inflammation, especially in female patients.

Cloudy urine in diabetes sufferers due to urinary tract infections, is often the white cloudy urine. There are a lot of white blood cells in urine, as well as bacteria, pus cells.

How to Make Potato Wine

Learning how to make potato wine is exciting. Its simple fermentation process is similar to the one that produces great Burgundy and lowly pruno. The yeast does the work. It’s illegal but possible to distill potato wine into the famous Irish beverage called poteen.

Two basic methods produce potato wine, or three if poteen and similar beverages are counted as wine. One approach uses actual potato bits as the basis of the wine. The other uses potato water to condition and flavor wine that depends upon other materials for flavor.

Supplies and equipment are available at winemaking stores and online. Assemble all equipment and supplies in advance. Airlock, siphon, yeast, pectic enzyme, and perhaps Campden tablets are useful, as well as wine bottles and a way to seal them. Plastic bottles similar to watercooler bottles are handy for large quantities of wine, but for smaller amounts go with what you already have. Winemaking can be messy, so protect your work surface or work in a garage or shed.

Potato water wine

This wine is flavored with ginger and citrus. The recipe is modified from one on the informative jackkellerwinemaking website. The pectic enzyme breaks down plant materials that cause haze, the yeast ferments the wine, and the stabilizer stops fermentation.

5 lbs. potatoes
3 lbs. dark brown sugar
4 lemons, zested and juiced
2 oranges, zested and juiced
½ teaspoon pectic enzyme
½ oz. fresh ginger, thinly sliced
water
wine yeast

Wine stabilizer or Campden tablets

Do not use potatoes with a greenish tinge or sprouts, because they contain a mild poison that may taint your wine. Use sound potatoes with no bad spots. Do not peel, but scrub and boil the potatoes in a gallon of water for 20 minutes. Strain the water, reserving potatoes for another use.

Add two pounds of sugar to the water, along with the citrus zest and juice. When you zest the lemons and oranges, try to get as little of the white pith as possible, because it may be bitter. Add the ginger. Bring the mixture to a boil, and then simmer about 15 minutes, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

Remove and strain into a sterile container, and cover with sterile cloth. Cool to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and add the enzyme. Cover with cloth, and let rest overnight. Activate wine yeast according to package directions and add. Ferment for seven days, stirring each day.

Stir in remaining sugar, and let settle over night. Siphon into a new sterile container leaving sediment behind, affix airlock, and let ferment for 60 days.

Rack, and affix airlock again. After it settles, rack again, and reattach the airlock. After four months, stabilize with Campden tablets or wine conditioner, and rack into bottles.

Simple potato wine

This recipe, modified slightly from one at insightful indepthinfo.com, incorporates more potato essence in the mix.

3 pounds potatoes
4 pounds sugar
4 ounces chopped light raisins
4 lemons
2 oranges
1 tablespoon wine yeast

Scrub sound healthy potatoes and grate into a pot. Add 3 quarts water. Bring to a boil and then simmer, skimming off the protein scum that rises. The scum is harmless, but may spoil the clarity of the wine. Simmer and skim until the surface is clear.

Put the raisins and sugar into a large container with a lid. Strain the potato mixture onto it. Juice the oranges and lemons and add with enough water to make a gallon of liquid all together.

Let the mixture sit covered for about a week, with the cover slightly askew so there is just a slit for gases to escape. Then siphon the liquid into a container with an airlock.

After ten days, rack it into another sterile container, leaving the sediment behind, and airlock. Let it sit in the jug about six months. Bottle it, seal, and wait another six months to drink.

Wine balance

If wine continues to ferment in the bottles, you may hear pops from the basement as trapped gases escape from formerly sealed bottles. In fact, you may hear small explosions.

In the first recipe, a stabilizer stops fermentation to avoid this problem. In the second, the yeast should die as the alcohol it produces reaches a high enough concentration to kill it. One of the winemaker’s goals is to balance the sugar that feeds the yeast with the alcohol that kills it.

Potatoes make acceptable wine, as do persimmons, elderberries, carrots, and many other foodstuffs. Home winemaking is challenging and fun, and often produces a remarkable product.

Best Wines to Serve with Beef

Wines are the perfect way to marry all the ingredients in one plate. But today there are so many to choose from that choosing the right one can be tricky. But once you get to know the basics of wine and meal combinations, you can grow your knowledge on your very own, making your own experimentation and trying different combinations.

One of the key rules you’ve probably heard of is “red wine with red meat; white wine with white meat.” Of course every rule has its exceptions, and in this case there are lots of white wines that can go well with some red meat meals and vice versa. But this rule is still a very good starting point!

Let’s concentrate on red wines. What makes the difference between one red wine and another while combined with a meal is the amount of tannin. Tannin are the natural organic compounds (coming from the grape’s skin, the seeds and the stems) with which red (or rosé) wines are made of. These are what give the color to the wine (thus why white wines have no tannins!). Tannin is also one main classification criteria of wines since it greatly affects the taste (depending on the soil where the grapes were grown, the weather, the region, the methods used, etc.)

Know this: a wine with lots of tannin (tannic wines) are stronger and their taste is more pronounced than the less tannic ones. A good example for a high-tannin wine is the Irouléguy from the South-West region of France. As opposed to a Beaujolais which is less tannic.

Now let’s go to a beef meal. Of course a different cooking mode calls for a different wine.

First: Beef steak (“blue” or medium-rare),
Calls for a powerful and rich red wine:
Pomérol – wine from Bordeaux, France
Pinot Noir – wine from Alsace, France
The traditional Cabernet Sauvignon – wine from California, USA or Australia

Second: A grilled beef with some sauce (Béarnaise maybe? or Pepper sauce?
Calls for a well-rounded and perfumed wine:
Madiran – wine from the South West region of France
Château-Neuf-du-Pape – wine from Vallée du Rhône, France
Aglianico del Vulture – wine from Italy
Naoussa – wine from Greece

Third: A long-simmered beef,
Calls for a high-tannin, strong and full-bodied wine:
Arbois – wine from Jura, France
Pinot Noir – wine from South Africa or Argentina
Shiraz – wine from California, USA

Well, these are only some of the thousands of combination you can make, and remember, taste is personal, it may “go well” with your meal, but that doesn’t mean you will like it!

Instead of choosing a wine to match your meal, try choosing a meal to match your favorite wine! What about that!

Have a nice one!
